Approval Letters:
A correct approval letter from your Vocational Rehabilitation counselor will not be a letter at all but will be in the form of a 1905. The generic letter you receive in the mail stating you are entitled to Ch. 31 benefits is not the approval letter we are looking for – that is simply a statement to you that you may qualify for Ch. 31 benefits. As you continue the Vocational Rehabilitation (VR&E) process you will receive your official approval or denial to attend our training. Most often counselor's already know the process in regards to submitting the required 1905 but if not or if they have any more questions, these can usually be easily resolved by supplying the contact information for our admissions department to them. Please do not contact the admissions department and request we call your counselor. Many counselors will NOT discuss your file with us without your prior written consent due to privacy constraints.
Denial Letters:
The receipt of a denial letter for VR&E benefits does not disqualify you from attending our training program. Grants are available for those who do not qualify for VR&E and will be processed automatically by the admissions department upon receipt of an approved denial letter. Reasons for denial of VR&E must be legitimate and beyond the control of the veteran. Common acceptable denial reasons include being over-educated, counselor does not feel program is a good fit for you, window of eligibility has passed for VR&E benefits, etc. Common non-approved denial letters (ones not accepted by the VBTC) include having your claim suspended for not attending required appointments, poor attitude or cooperation with the VR&E program, or a lengthy period of time between your denial letter and the current date. If your denial letter is several years old and your disabilities have changed we may require you to reapply to Vocational Rehabilitation as you may find you now qualify where you did not previously.
Please realize this is a simple informative article and does not cover all situations or address all VR&E / VBTC policies. For additional questions regarding VR&E and how it applies to the VBTC please be sure to contact your VA counselor and/or the VBTC admissions staff.
