About satellite & wireless connections:

Similarly, wireless connections also have drawbacks.  While using a wireless connection may work well for standard users who mainly just browse the internet and check e-mail, it is not very supportive of high-demand VOIP applications.  The main reasons are high max ping times, speed fluctuations, packet loss, and overall security.  As you navigate from site to site while browsing the internet if the wireless connection you are on loses a packet or two of information, the website will often just request it again from the server.  This may cause a fraction of a second delay in the total time it takes to load each webpage.  Most users don't notice this.  However, when you are using your wireless connection for VOIP applications as we do it can cause extreme delays in speech or even the total loss of the signal to the application resulting in interrupted calls and system errors.  In addition, many employers will not hire employees on wireless connections due to security concerns.  Any wirelessly transmitted data has the ability to be compromised and due to legalities most companies will not take the chance with wireless connections.  Overall, the drawbacks of wireless connections for the work environment far exceed the benefits.

For these very important reasons students and staff are not allowed to train or be employed on satellite or wireless connections.  As part of the admissions process each applicant's computer must meet the minimum specifications to include computer hardware, computer software, and internet connection.  The technical support technician will run a series of connectivity tests to determine if your internet connection qualifies.  Although you may on the surface meet the minimum upload/download speed requirements you may have additional latency, packet loss, and stability issues which could disqualify you from receiving a passing score on the technical screening.  To assist in passing the connectivity test be sure to be on a hard-wired DSL/Cable connection and ensure the service you are paying for through your provider can give you what is required by our program.  Often the cheapest budget packet is too close to our standards and you may need to select a slightly better quality package for bandwidth.  Remember what is advertised is often the MAXIMUM speed you can get with that plan, not your average speed.  When purchasing a new internet connection plan ensure you are getting what you pay for in terms of speed and quality BEFORE the technician leaves your home.
